Armin Jozef Jacobus Daniël van Buuren or better known as Armin van Buuren is a popular Dutch DJ and record producer. Best known for his legendary radio show “A State of Trance”, Armin van Buuren has been hosting it since 2001. Since its inception, A State of Trance (ASOT). has been broadcasted to nearly 40 million listeners in more than 80 countries on over 100 FM radio stations. The radio show hosted by Armin has helped cultivate an interest in trance music around the globe. 

Early Life

Born on 25th December, 1976, in Leiden, Armin spent most of his childhood in Koudekerk aan den Rijn. Armin was inspired by several electronic music artists including French electronic music composer Jean-Michel Jarre. Other artists include Dutch DJ and Remixer Ben Liebrand. After graduating from the Stedelijk Gymnasium Leiden in 1995, Armin studied law at the Leiden University. However, after he completed his education, Armin van Buuren started working as a DJ in Club Nexus. During this period, he used to play multiple sets a week which usually lasted more than six hours. 

Music Career

Soon after, Armin Van Buuren met Dave Lewis. Dave introduced him as a DJ in the United States and England. This is when Armin’s music career started to take off. In 1996, he released EP and Push on Timeless Records. “Blue Fear” was one of the first tracks that helped Armin gain attention from the public. Later on, in the summer of 1999, Armin was signed to AM PM Records. As time progressed, he also started his own label called Armin together with United Recordings. 

Being a talented electronic music artist, Armin Van Buuren began working on a compilation series. This mix included progressive house and vocal trance styles of music. Armin’s first album “A State of Trance” sold over 10,000 copies and was a hit. Gradually, Armin’s focus began to shift from his album releases towards a new project, which was his own radio show. In 2001, Armin started his own radio show “A State of Trance” on ID&T Radio. Since then, his two-hour weekly radio show has become a fan favorite amongst EDM & trance music lovers. 

Awards & Nominations

Van Buuren has also been ranked as the number one DJ by popular DJ Mag, a record of five times, four years in a row. He has also been nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording for his track “This Is What It Feels Like”. The single also featured Trevor Guthrie. Armin Van Buuren is also the fourth trance artist ever to receive a Grammy Award nomination. He also holds the record for the most entries on the Billboard Dance-Electronic Albums Chart.
